The previously developed carbon balance model for apple (Malus × domestica),
Abstract
named MaluSim (Lakso et al., 2001), should be adapted to growing
systems in mid-Europe.
The mostly used growing system in mid-Europe is called slender spindle.
Nowadays, there is a trend to a new type of slender spindle, which has a
thin top and a wide center.
Hence, slender spindle could be divided into the widely used “old” type
and the “new” thin type.
Compared to the apple growing system used in the USA, trees in Europe
are much smaller.
Thus, the main changes in MaluSim should concern the leaf-area
development, and the numbers of spurs and long shoots.
One aim was to predict natural thinning, through the carbon balance and,
by this, quantify the need for artificial thinning.
Another objective was the insertion of a water sub-model into MaluSim.
Water status has a major effect on all physiological processes and thus,
it also plays an important role in carbon balance modelling.
It would be very important to determine periods where water stress in
apple trees is likely to occur and how water stress may affect orchard
performance.
After the insertion of a water sub-model, MaluSim could also be used for
climate impact research.
